Italian Shoes by Henning Mankell
Frederick Welin is a retired surgeon. He lives alone on a remote Swedish island with his ageing dog and cat. His only regular human contact is with his postman, Jansson. Theirs is an unusual friendship, largely because they really don't like each other at all.
Frederick's self-imposed exile is rudely interrupted by the arrival of a 70-year-old woman with a walking frame who appears outside his kitchen window one morning. Needless to say, in time-honoured tradition, she is someone from his past and brings with her a whole mess of skeletons previously in cupboards that are going to throw his snowy idyll all asunder.
A really rather unorthodox and impressive novel about old age, regret and your past catching up with you.
