Product Information
From the first line of this incredible book you know it's going to be interesting...
Mother died today. Or, maybe, yesterday; I can't be sure.
The plot is almost of secondary importance. Mersault, the outsider, refuses (or cannot) pretend. He doesn't lie or fabricate the truth, when it would be beneficial to him if he did. When he attends his mother's funeral, he declines seeing her body, prefering to go for a cigarette and coffee. He notes actions around him with detached interest. He waches. Essentially he is outside of society.
As the book progresses, this seeming refusal to conform is seen as a more and more dangerous trait, threatening to be his downfall. Not that this matters to him...
Since I first read this in my late teens, it has stayed with me. A truly remarkable novel.
