The Sky is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson

Product Information

It’s been a while since I carried a book about with me wherever I went.  I leave them lying all over the place and dip in and out whenever I can.  But the mark of a really good book is one that you absolutely cannot be separated from… and The Sky is Everywhere is one of those books.

Lennie Walker’s sister dies suddenly, hurtling Lennie out of the shadows and leaving her grief stricken and uncharacteristically boy-mad.  She falls hopelessly and guiltily for her deceased sister’s boyfriend, Toby and at the same time with gorgeous new-guy-in-town, Joe.

First of all, I have to says The Sky is Everywhere is one of the most beautiful books I’ve ever possessed.  It is in the form of a journal, complete with elasticated binder and throughout there are pages with poetry and scraps of jottings on various different surfaces.  The font is blue and there are pages with blue skies and puffy clouds… ahhh, I am a sucker for gorgeousness.

However, this is not a book which is all show and no substance. The writing easily outshines the packaging and as for the characters… they are without doubt some of the most glorious people ever to grace the pages of a novel.  I fell in love with each and every one of them in all their quirky, idiosyncratic glory. Like Gram with her almost always green paintings and Big with his lothario lifestyle and his pot smoking habit, they enveloped me in their world and I was utterly captured.

On reading Jandy Nelson’s bio I discovered she has an MFA in Poetry.  This comes across so vividly in the absolutely beautiful writing and the small snippets of poems scattered throughout the novel.  I was just blown away by her incredible skill with words.   This is definitely a book to be savoured, not rushed since some of the most memorable moments are without doubt the images that the author sets in front of you.

Despite this being a book about grief, there are so many light hearted and funny moments that make Lennie’s journey one that you are enchanted to be a part of.  It’s not a wallowing in despair novel, nor is it an outright tear jerker, it is both uplifting and emotional and it is a book that I will list amongst my top ten of all time and one I will happily recommend to anyone and everyone.
