Fludd by Hilary Mantel

Product Information

I love Hilary Mantel's writing and this is probably my favourite of her books. I say probably because i'm still buzzing from reading Wolf Hall last year. It's a story based in a small remote godfearing town in Northern England in the 50's. The town's priest, Father Angwyn has lost his faith, the townsfolk have no purpose in their lives and the nuns endure the monotony of their lives. Enter Fludd, a curate apparently sent by the bishop to reinvigorate Angwyn's faith. However, Fludd is more than he seems and strange things start to happen in the town. Is he who he says he is, or is there something more magical about this mysterious figure.

There are hints of Angela Carter in the way that fairytale and fantasy are weaved into this book, and also it's hilarious. Hilary Mantel is a master storyteller and this book, published in 1989, although not her best known, is a brilliant way to introduce yourself to her writing.
