First in the Night Angels trilogy. This is a lovely brutal world, with lovely cruel characters and simply evil politics. Not so much a fight between good & evil, as a clash between not-very-nice and really-quite-nasty. If Weeks doesn't brutally murder his sympathetic characters, he hacks all their friends to pieces and leaves them emotionally crippled. What fun.
